Studio Sessions Wardrobe Guide / by Kylie Greffenius

Santa Sessions

Our Santa Session clients love to dress up and if you’re looking for inspiration, here are some tips to help you decide what to wear …

  1. Novelty pyjamas and Christmas shirts always look great. They’re usually made with a bright mix of colours that make your photos pop. Our main street neighbours are accustomed to seeing our clients walk around in their pyjamas so don’t be afraid to try it.

  2. Ugly Christmas Sweaters and wooly jumpers are a great idea because the studio is cold for Santa’s comfort.

  3. Wearing all white or mostly white looks fresh and white lace dresses provide a beautiful ethereal look but keep in mind that white will reflect the studio lighting and lighten your skin. If you or someone in your family has very light skin this can result in making them look more pale than usual.

  4. Wearing all black can offer a stunning moody look and what I personally love most about solid matte black fabric is that it has a tendency to minimise any bumps that we might not want to highlight. Note that black will absorb light and not brighten the skin in the same way that white does. Black will also print very dark and matte fabrics will usually look solid black on a photo print. One of my favourite looks was a family who came in wearing black t-shirts, dark denim and Doc Martens shoes.

  5. Solid red is a great Christmas colour and the red will reflect in faces adding more colour. If someone in your group wants to reduce the redness in their skin they should choose another coloured top.

  6. Blue looks great on this year’s Santa Set. I’ve introduced elements of blue in the decorating and blue clothes pop against the warm tones of the sofa, walls and floors.

  7. Avoid short tight skirts - especially on children. Skirts ride up when the wearer sits down and the camera can see everything. Consider bike shorts for toddlers wearing dresses.

  8. Shoes for little ones can look cute but as they’re sitting down on set it’s usually the soles of the shoes that show up in the photos. Consider bare feet for toddlers and they can wear thongs or slides into the studio so they’re easy to take off and put on again.

Just remember, there is no pressure to dress up at all. When I look at photographs my eye always goes straight to the happy faces.
